Set in a politically tumultuous ’70s Chile, just before Augustus Pinochet snatched power, Machuca tells of the unlikely friendship between two 11-year-old boys from different social strata - a wealthy neighbourhood and a shantytown. They bond while competing for the affection of a spunky shanty girl, but the coming coup will shake their lives. Andres Wood based the film on his own childhood experiences, skillfully blending vividly drawn political drama with a tender and sweetly funny coming of age tale – all accompanied by a hip 70’s soundtrack!
